The term ‘quest’ is now familiar to homestay owners


In the beginning of May Vidomlya rural settlement hosted an unusual training . The participants got acquainted with an innovative and quiet popular tourist product – questing. Quests are a sort of educational and informative getting one's bearings. After theoretical introduction training participants implemented their knowledge on practical experience: while walking around Vidomlya they defined the key points for a quest, tips and hints, directions. One can say that at the end of the day Vidomlya dwellers already had the first version of quest.  more info

Belarusian Association ‘Country Escape’ organized an unusual round table ‘Agroecotourism ‘without barriers’: adaptation of rural tourism to the needs of people with disabilities’. Belarus presented its experience in rural tourism in Public Chamber of Russian Federation

On the 6th of March in Public Chamber of Russian Federation there took place hearings dedicated to agro and ecotourism development. Chair of the Board of the Belarusian Agro- and Ecotourism Association ‘Country Escape’ Valeria Klitsounova shared Belarusian experience in this sphere. It is one of the most successful national projects in our country. Its success is provided by public-private partnership. more info

Belarus is on the way towards tourism clusters

Our organization together with Greifswald University (Germany) started implementing the project ‘Establishing Rural Tourism Clusters in Belarus: Innovation, Integration and Institutionalization as a basis for sustainable rural development’. First events within the project took place on the 1st -2nd of March 2013. It was a kick off meeting and training dedicated to tourism cluster development. more info

10-th Anniversary of Rural Tourism in Belarus!

Belarus hosted a seminar “Cross-border tourist routes between Lithuania and Belarus”

Last week (from 5th till 7th of October) delegation from ‘Lithuanian association of palaces and mansions’ («Lietuvos pilių ir dvarų asociacija», http://www.dvarai.lt/) visited Belarus. The visit was aimed at getting acquainted with cultural heritage from Grand Duchy of Lithuania (mansions, castles, palaces) and developing cross-border tourist routes between our countries. more info

New project in the sphere of agroecotourism was launched in Belarus

USAID project “Local Entrepreneurship and Economic Development”, implemented by UNDP, was presented on the 5th of September 2012. Ministry of sport and tourism of Belarus acts as implementation agency for the project. more info

‘Old Man of Greenways’ Chuck Flink has visited Belarus

From the 23d of August till 1st of September 2012 Belarusian Association ‘Country Escape’ hosted famous American expert in Greenways – Charles “Chuck” Flink. He is President of Alta/Greenways a national greenway and non-motorized transportation planning firm, headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Mr.Flink has been in Greenways industry for 30 years and in known in USA as an “Old Man of Greenways” as he has completed greenway plans for more than 225 communities within 35 States. He has also provided consulting services to clients in Argentina, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, Japan and St. Croix, USVI. Moreover Mr.Flink is the author of two main methodological books on Greenways development. more info

Fifth culinary “Motalskiya prysmaki” festival hosted guests on the 12th of August

On the 12th of August the tastiest event – culinary festival “Motalskiya prysmaky” - hosted guests in the village of Motol (Brest region, Ivanovo district). This festival was not only a wonderful chance to enjoy local cuisine but it was also a 590th anniversary of the village. In terms of the festival Belarusian Association “Country Escape” organized “Motol readings”* dedicated to Belarusian traditional small settlements called “mestechko” – a round table where experts and historians shared their opinions and discussed the potential and future of such places. more info

Creative Green Tourism Laboratory: Belarusian tourism is becoming greener

On the 1-2d of June 2012 Belarusian Association “Country Escape” has held a non-traditional event – ‘Creative Green Tourism Laboratory’. The event was held in terms of AGORA 2.0 project ‘Heritage tourism for increased BSR identity’ (http://www.agora2-tourism.net), supported by the Baltic Sea Region Program 2007-2013. The event appeared to be really creative. People were involved in ‘green’ animation: forest mythological creatures surrounded participants and addressed them with questions and predictions. Local ‘gentlemen’ were fighting with each other because of accusing each other of hunting in Naliboky forest. And only by chance both of them survived. more info

«Open Doors’ Day» on Belarusian Farmsteads was a great success!

On the 20th of May 2012 national action «Open Doors’ Day» on Belarusian Farmsteads took place all over Belarus. The action was initiated by the Belarusian Agro- and Ecotourism Association “Country Escape” and was supported by the Ministry of sports and tourism of Belarus. More than 300 farmsteads open their doors for guests, and each owner prepared some particular surprise. For example Kopyl region offered visitors a weaving contest “A Milky Way from Grandma’s hands”. more info

American B&B expert has visited Belarus

Belarusian Association “Country Escape” has recently hosted American expert in the Bed&Breakfast sphere Jay Karen. Since 2007 Jay is a SEO and President of the Professional Association of Innkeepers International – PAII www.innkeeping.org which unites around 2000 B&B in USA. During his work with the Association it has experience enormous growth: it has a unique training and internship system, efficient up-to-date marketing, quarterly magazine and regular conferences and event for B&B owners. In January 2012 our organizations signed a Cooperation Agreement. more info

A week-stay in Belarusian village was sold on a US Holiday Auction

Last year Belarusian Association “Country Escape” has started cooperation with CREST (Center for Responsible Travel - http://www.responsibletravel.org) which has already brought positive results. The first initiative was donation of a trip from Belarusian side to the annual Holiday Auction organized and held by CREST. more info

A Better Way to Stay: Belarusian Farmsteads’ – the first map of farmsteads in Belarus

Belarusian Association ‘Country Escape’ has lately published the map with Belarusian farmsteads on it. This is the first initiative of this kind in our country. The map includes all Belarusian farmsteads and historical and cultural heritage objects that could be of interest for tourists. more info

USA and Belarus B&B Associations Sign Cooperation Agreement

A “Letter of Cooperation” pledge agreement was officially accepted last week between the Bed and Breakfast associations of the USA and Belarus at the annual meeting of the Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII). The Presidents of both Associations, Jay Karen and Dr. Valeria Klitsounova, signed the document that initially launches an exchange program of professional training resources and opens membership of the 800 Belarusian B&B’s and Farmsteads to enjoy the significant benefit of PAII resources. more info

The ‘Kalyady Tsars’ rite attract particular experts’ attention

Once a year on the 13th of January village of Semezhevo (Kopyl district, Minsk oblast) gathers locals and visitors for a spectacular Christmas rite – “Kalyady Tsars”. This festive event comprises the traditional elements of Belarusian Christmas and New Year carnival but with its own special flavor. Seven young men, chosen as the 'Kalyady Tsars', dress in white shirts and trousers along with the traditional Semezhava waistbands and geometrical ornament. more info

Informational technologies attracting attention of European agroecotourism leaders

On the 22-23rd of November in Lithuania there took place Eurogites (European Federation of Farm and Village Tourism) meeting dedicated to ICT usage in the promotion of agroecotourism. Representatives of Belarusian Association “Country Escape” actively participated in the meeting. American B&Bs and Belarusian Farmsteads: ways to cooperate

Belarusian Association of Agro- and Ecotourism “Country Escape” started cooperation with American Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII). The cooperation started with a visit of the Chairman of the Board of “Country Escape” to the States where she has visited one prominent American B&B – Stonewall Jackson Inn in Virginia – and got acquainted with its owner – Doctor Wayne Engel. more info

“Mermaid’s week” ended with a beautiful rite in Luban district

On the 19th of June Luban district ended celebrating “mermaid’s week” – a pre-Christian holiday connected with harvesting. According to the rite each evening during the week women holding hands walk along village streets with mermaids’ songs. more info

Major international tourism project AGORA 2.0 has been registered in Belarus

On the 24-25th of March in Tallinn there was organized partners’ meeting of major international tourism project AGORA 2.0 “Heritage tourism for increased Baltic Sea Region identity”. The project is aimed at formation of a joint tourism image of the Baltic Sea Region on the basis of natural and cultural heritage. more info

For the first time the exhibition in Israel was a success for Belarus

On the 8 – 9th of February the International Mediterranean Tourism Market took place in Tel-Aviv. There were representatives from 33 different countries including Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Uzbekistan and Georgia more info

“Tsary” went round carol-singing in the village of Semegevo on the 13th of January

“Tsary” rite – the first Belarusian rite included in UNESCO Intangible Heritage List. It is popular in the village of Semegevo, Kopyl district since 18th century and exists only here. Among the guests who arrived in Semegevo were representatives of UNESCO, Institute of culture, representatives if Belarusian Association “Country Escape”, experts in the field of cultural heritage and tourism. The participants considered “Tsari” rite as a unique base for tourism product development. This will contribute to the increase of self-consciousness of our people and will attract foreign tourists. more info

“Tsiareshka” got married in the village of Onoshki

The winter holiday “Tsiareshka marriage” took place in the village of Onoshki (Lepel district) on the 7th of January. This is old Christmas rite is in the process of inclusion into UNESCO Intangible Heritage list. It is very popular among people living in Lepel district. Among the guests one could find representatives of Belarusian Association “Country Escape”, journalists, representatives of tourism administrations. It is planned that soon this unique rite will turn into a tourism product for small groups of authentic cultural heritage lovers from Belarus and abroad. more info

Slow Food movement is going forward in Belarus

Participants of Slow Food movement and experts in ethnographic and culinary heritage gathered on “Nakvasy” farmstead (Dzerginsky district) on the 10th of December 2010. This is Terra Madre day celebrated all over the world. Eco-gastronomic movement Slow Food is dedicated to preservation of biodiversity, development of local economies, support of farmers. Among the participants of the meeting were famous culinary expert Renato Cucinotta, ethnographer Ivan Cruck, expert in culinary heritage Tadeush Novogrodski and others. more info

Agroecotourism is among priorities for cooperation between Belarus and Israel

On the 9th of December 2010 there took place negotiations between representatives of Ministry of sports and tourism led by the Minister Oleg Kachan, Economic Adviser of Minister of tourism Michael Dulman, Israeli Ambassador in Belarus Edward Shapira and Chairman of the Board of the Belarusian Association “Country Escape” Valeria Klitsounova. The first agro and ecotourism business-incubator in Belarus has opened!

The official opening of the first agro- and ecotourism business-incubator in Belarus – Centre of agro- and ecotourism development in Belarus took place on the 7th of December. This initiative was implemented with the support from OSCE office in Minsk in terms of the project “Agro and ecotourism business incubator as a tool of sustainable development in rural areas of Belarus”. Belarus actively participates in activities of international rural tourism organizations

On the 8th of November 2010 in New-Market (Great Britain) that is the capital of horse race there took place the General Assembly of the European Federation of rural tourism (Eurogites) where Belarusian Association “Country Escape” is among members. This federation is the biggest in Europe – it unites more than 30 countries dealing with rural tourism therefore it is an honor to be a member. This meeting was interesting and instructive: we exchanged experience with our colleagues, learned about new tendencies in agrotourism, new forms of promotion of tourism products. Belarusian farmsteads have a chance to get ECEAT ecolable

Belarusian Association “Country Escape” started to promote European ecolables in Belarus. We are the members of ECEAT (European Centre for Eco- and Agrotourism). One of ECEAT fields of activities is development and introduction of the quality standards and ecocertification for farmsteads. Joint BTC and AGORA 2.0 project “Heritage tourism for Increased BSR identity” meeting took place in Minsk in «Crowne Plaza» Hotel on the 7-8th of October 2010. The project AGORA 2.0 project “Heritage tourism for Increased BSR identity” is aimed at increase of BSR identity by developing heritage tourism and innovative tourism product on the heritage basis that may attract tourists to the region and form its joint identity. more info

Press-conference summarizing the results of a familiarization tour for Israeli journalists

The conference “Cooperation between Republic of Belarus and Israel in the field of tourism” was held in the National Press Centre on the 3d of September. Among the participants were representatives of famous Israeli tourism mass media that visited Belarus in terms of a familiarization tour initiated by the Belarusian Association “Country Escape” with the support from the Ministry of Sports and Tourism and Israeli Embassy in Belarus. From the 27th of August till 3d of September the group of nine Israeli journalists – representatives of the major Israeli tourism mass media – has visited Belarus for the first time. Culinary festival “Motalskiya prysmaki”

Culinary festival “Motalskiya prysmaki” was held for the third time in the village of Motol, Ivanovo district, Brest region. This year festival was two-day long. The first day was dedicated to “Creative gastronomic tourism laboratory”. Leading experts in the field of culinary heritage delivered their presentations, several projects on culinary heritage were presented, a round table “Development of innovative tourism product on the basis of culinary heritage” was organized. more info

Annensky Kirmash Fair welcomed guests!

The unique event – Annensky Kirmash Fair - took place in Zelva, Grodno region. It used to be the second biggest fair in the Old World after Leipzig Fair. Nowadays local administration tries to revive the traditions of the past. The whole city was involved in preparations for the event. more info

Now even Prime ministers choose rural accommodation

In the period from 25th of July till the 1st of August there was held a cycle race of Lithuanian cyclists led by the Prime minister of the Lithuanian Republic Andrus Cubilus. Cyclists have visited lots of places connected with the history of Grand Duchy of Lithuania along the route Voronovo, Lida, Novogrudok, Mir, Nesvizh, Baranovichi, Voroncha, Ivye, Golshany, Olshany, Gerviaty, where they stayed on farmsteads. Among the first farmsteads the delegation visited was “Lidsky Hutorok” farmstead owned by Valentina Markevich that impressed the participants to a high extend. Cyclists planted a tree for the friendship between our two countries. Also cyclists visited such farmsteads as “White stork”, “Svitiazianka” and “Hippika”. more info

Belarus presented its Greenways on a prestigious international conference

The most famous and prestigious conference on Greenwasy «Fabos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning» took place on the 8-11th of July in Budapest. The conference united participants from 33 countries and 5 continents. This conference is held once in three years under guidance of Massachusetts University, USA. United States are the motherland of Greenways concept. Belarus presented the Greenway “Blue Necklace of Rossony” which attracted significant interest of participants. Soon we are expecting a visit of American experts in the filed of Greenways and “green” tourists. more info

Belarus is among the participants of AGORA project

On the 11-13th of February in Greifswald (Germany) there was held a kick-off meeting of the big international project AGORA 2.0 “Heritage tourism for Increased BSR Identity” which was supported by the Baltic Sea Region Program 2007 – 2013. The project unites 24 partners from 9 European countries. Though our country is not a Baltic Sea state we are important for the region and can offer a range of innovative tourism products based on natural and cultural heritage, that will attract new tourists to the region. more info

Belarusian delegation learns rural tourism from Israel

From 26th till 29th of April Belarusian delegation was on a study tour “Rural tourism in Israel” supported by the MASHAV centre and Israeli Embassy in Belarus. Among the participants there were farmstead owners, representatives of the Ministry of sports and tourism of Belarus, experts, representatives of collective farms. The participants had a chance to see the best practices of rural tourism in Israel. In terms of the visit the group attended the meeting of the Minister of sports and tourism of Belarus Oleg Kachan and the Minister of tourism of Israel Stas Mesezhnikov where parties signed and agreement on cooperation between our countries in the field of tourism. Now this agreements needs fulfillment and rural tourism will be among the priorities. more info

Belarusian rural tourism was presented on AGROTRAVEL in Poland

The II International rural tourism fair was held on the 9th-11th of April in the town of Keltse (Poland). The fair was organized by the Ministry of agriculture and development of rural areas, Ministry of sports and tourism and a range of Polish regional tourism organizations. The event united representatives of Polish and other organizations dealing with rural and agrotourism development – from Belarus, Lithuania, Estonia, Moldova, Russia. Belarusian Association “Country Escape” presented Belarusian rural tourism which attracted attention of potential partners and tourists. In terms of the fair there was also held a conference “Rural tourism on the way to commercialization” including seminars and work in groups. All the participants of the fair had a chance to go on a study tours to the agrotourism villages of Bałtów, Kurozwęki and Kocieczyn. Baltic States share their experience in sustainable rural tourism

On the 6th-7th of May in Minsk there was held a seminar “Sustainable rural tourism: learning by doing”. he seminar was organized by the CBSS Expert Group on Sustainable Development (Baltic 21) and Belarusian Association “Country Escape”. The event was aimed at various stakeholders from Ukraine and Belarus that work in the field of sustainable rural tourism development – representatives of local authorities, NGOs, mass media, small and media enterprises, public at large. Experts and invited guests had positive impressions from Belarusian rural tourism. The seminar resulted in lots of joint project ideas and establishment of international cooperation for the future of sustainable rural tourism. more info

Public council on rural tourim in Grodno region has improved its status

On the 5th of February in Grodno there was held a meeting of new members of the Public council on rural tourism development. Now Public council includes 18 people and it will work under the Grodno executive committee. The representatives of the sports and tourism department of the executive committee are involved in the council. Hopefully partnership with authorities will contribute to the work of public council. Natallia Barkova, the lecturer of the Grodno university, was elected as the head of the council. During the meeting the annual plan of the council's work, the results of the best farmstead contest and cooperation with Belarusian association "Country escape" and Johannes Rau international educational centre were discussed. more info

The implementation of new projects in the sphere of rural tourism has started

On the 22-23 of January 2010 the opening conference of the 5th phase of the support program of Belarus has taken place in the Johannes Rau Minsk international ediational centre (pr.Gazety "Pravda",11) supported by the the German Embassy in Belarus. Among the participants of the conference there were famous experts of the support program and potential partners from Belarus and Germany. On the conference there was a working group on rural tourism held by Matthias Baerens - the head of ECEAT-Germany. The stand "Green Holidays in Belarus" represented on the conference our new project "Sustainable rural tourism in Belarus - networking and support of main actors", which will unite the representatives of all regions of our country. more info

Festival "Folklore without bounds"

On the 19th of January in the village of Tyshkovichy (Ivanovo district, Brest oblast) for the fifth time there was held the international festival "Folklore without bounds" which united the participants from Belarus, Ukraine and Poland. Among the participants there were folk groups which presented the authentic Christmas costumes, songs and rites. The festival concured with one of the main orthodox holidays - Epiphany. Sledding and dipping into ice hole were organized. Such events can become a basis for unique tourist product connected with traditional culture of Polesye region and attract foreign and belarussian tourists in the region. more info

Renovation of Christmas traditions on farmsteads

On the 9th of January 2010 on the "Ganka" farmstead (Vologin district, Minsk region) there has taken place a presentation of "Christmas evening" dedicated to traditional belarussian winter holidays - 'Koljady' and Christmas. The owner of the "Ganka" farmstead Anatoly Ganets and the owner of the "Borok" farmstead Ales Los united their efforts in implementing their creative idea. The event has become a real creative rural tourism laboratory. Christmas evening united closest friends and was full of surprises, sharp images and impressions. All participants had a possibility to admire a Christmas puppet show - traditional belarussian "batleika". In compliance with traditions 12 dishes appeared one by one on the table. The end of the evening was full of songs and dances to the music, played on old belarussian instruments - pipe, violin, horn. more info

System of penalties

In October, 5 representatives of the National Council of Belarus introduced amendments into the code of administrative offences related agro- and ecotourism development. According to the president’s decree ¹ 372 concerned agrotourism development in Belarus farmstead owners must inform rural council of deputies about their wish to lead activity of this kind. more info
